Calling aspiring actors: Come & perform in Four Families of the Fallen

We're looking for FOUR actors to join our ensemble cast of talented amateur performers for our exciting production of four original 10-minute plays commemorating 100 years since the end of the Great War in Elmbridge, Surrey.

Available roles: 4 x Women.

  • Margaret (F) (to play a 20-year-old)

  • Grace Freemantle (F) (to play a 32-year-old)

  • Alice Hoare (F) (to play a 31-year-old)

  • Mrs Hopkins (F) (to play a 45 to 60-year-old)

No prior experience is necessary. Must be 18 or over.

Rehearsals and requirements

  • Rehearsals will take place in Esher, and actors should be prepared to join weekly rehearsals on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm.

  • These will run from May 17 to September (with a short break in August).

  • More rehearsals may be necessary ahead of the performance.

The Performances

Four Families of the Fallen will premiere at a matinee on Saturday 8th September at The Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre (Walton on Thames) with a further outdoor special evening performance being planned for later that day, in Elmbridge (awaiting final confirmation).

We may also have opportunities to support other Great War commemoration events in Autumn across Elmbridge. These will be optional and subject to cast availability.

 

Details

Four families consists of four interconnected ten-minute plays, developed and written by the cast.

Each play has a cast of between three and five characters.

Play 1: Two Mothers:

Overview: Two hours before the 1918 memorial service at St James' Church, the middle class adoptive mother of sailor George Wills (among the first of Elmbridge's WW1 fallen), comes face-to-face with George's working class birth mother, for the first time in more than 25 years.

Available role:

  • LEAD ROLE - Margaret Sertin [Female]: (to play a 20-year-old): The enterprising and proud younger step-sister of a George Wills.

Play: 2: Lest We Forget

Overview: A grieving war widow and recently bereaved mother of two young boys, who is determined to fulfill her husband's last wish of never being forgotten, must decide whether to risk her future by protesting about her conscript husband being left off the memorial or accept help from her sisters.

Available roles:

  • LEAD ROLE - Alice Hoare [Female] (to play a 31 year-old): The unmarried, childless, feisty and youngest of the three sisters. A militant Suffragette and staunch feminist. Alice relishes the new freedoms and status that war has brought to her life.

  • SUPPORTING ROLE - Grace Freemantle [Female] (to play 32-year-old): Pious, childless, war-widow. The middle of the three adult Hoare sisters (Annie & Alice the others) and the family’s cool-headed diplomat.

Play 3: The White Feather Overview: 30 minutes before the memorial service, outside the church, the parents of an airman, killed in France in January 1918, have an unexpected encounter with the Suffragette they blame for their son's death.

Available roles:

  • SUPPORTING ROLE - Mrs Hopkins [Female] (to play 45 to 60-year-old): Mother of a Private killed in 1914. A traditionalist and supporter of the war.

  • Also includes Alice Hoare (see above)

Play 4: ​Revelations Overview: A well-respected former schoolmistress and widow of a community stalwart and mother of a fallen soldier, decides to boycott the memorial service after her concerns over the rector preaching propaganda from the pulpit reach a tipping point. Concerned for his reputation, the Reverend must persuade her to attend, but with only 10 minutes to go before the start of the service, the clock is ticking.

  • None.

We have an open casting policy: anyone over the age of 18 can audition this project.

I don't want to perform, but I'd love to be involved!

This is a community project, so even if you aren't cast in a primary role or don't want to perform, we'd love for you to be part of this event. There are many other ways to participate: Costume design, set design and build, make-up, publicity, etc. Please get in touch. Over 18's only.
